Area Coverage Calculation

Length: 500 metres
Width: 1.6 metres

Coverage = 500m x 1.6m = 800m²

So, 1 roll covers approximately 800 square metres before allowance for overlaps, cutting, wastage and farm bed spacing.

For better planning, allow some extra material depending on the shape of the beds, overlapping points and fixing method.

The Black Mulch Film 500M x 1.6M is a high-quality agricultural plastic film used to cover soil beds before planting. It helps control weeds, retain soil moisture, regulate soil temperature, reduce soil erosion and improve crop cleanliness.

The black colour blocks sunlight from reaching weeds, helping farmers reduce weeding costs and improve crop growth. It is ideal for vegetable farming, fruit farming, flower farms, nurseries, greenhouses and open-field farming.

Available at Shabbiri Hardware Kenya – Ongata Rongai and Tuala.

Main Uses of Black Mulch Film

1. Weed Control

Black mulch film blocks sunlight from reaching the soil surface, reducing weed growth around crops.

2. Moisture Retention

It reduces water evaporation from the soil, helping the soil stay moist for longer.

3. Soil Protection

It protects the soil surface from direct rain impact, erosion and nutrient loss.

4. Cleaner Crops

Fruits and vegetables are kept away from direct contact with soil, reducing dirt and improving crop presentation.

5. Better Crop Growth

By maintaining soil moisture and reducing weed competition, crops can grow healthier and more evenly.

6. Greenhouse & Open Field Farming

Suitable for both greenhouse farming and outdoor farm beds.

Benefits of Black Mulch Film

  • Helps reduce weed growth
  • Saves water by retaining soil moisture
  • Reduces labour cost for weeding
  • Keeps crops cleaner
  • Protects soil from erosion
  • Helps maintain better soil temperature
  • Improves farm bed appearance
  • Suitable for vegetables, fruits and flowers
  • Easy to lay, cut and install
  • Ideal for commercial and home farming

Installation Process

Step 1: Prepare the Land

Clear weeds, stones and debris from the planting area. Make sure the soil is well cultivated and levelled.

Step 2: Make Raised Beds

Prepare raised soil beds according to the crop spacing required. Raised beds help with drainage and proper root development.

Step 3: Apply Fertilizer or Manure

Before laying the mulch film, apply manure, fertilizer or drip irrigation lines if needed.

Step 4: Roll Out the Mulch Film

Unroll the black mulch film over the prepared bed. Ensure the film is straight and covers the full width of the bed.

Step 5: Secure the Edges

Cover the side edges with soil to hold the film firmly in place. You can also use pegs, stones or clips depending on the farm setup.

Step 6: Cut Planting Holes

Make holes at the correct spacing for your crop. Avoid making holes too large because weeds can grow through open spaces.

Step 7: Plant the Seedlings

Plant your seedlings through the holes and press the soil gently around each plant.

Step 8: Maintain the Farm

Check regularly to ensure the film is still firm, especially after wind or heavy rain.

Installation Tips

  • Use drip irrigation under the mulch film for best results.
  • Make small planting holes to reduce weed growth.
  • Bury the edges properly so wind does not lift the film.
  • Do not overstretch the film during installation.
  • Install on a clean and well-prepared bed for a neat finish.
  • For large farms, install in straight rows for easy crop management.
