Akfix AS606 Acrylic Siliconized Sealant is a premium one-component sealant built on an acrylic emulsion base reinforced with silicone emulsion. That "siliconized" reinforcement is what sets AS606 apart from ordinary decorator's caulk: it delivers noticeably better adhesion, higher elasticity and up to 15% joint movement capability, while still giving you the single biggest advantage acrylic has over pure silicone — you can paint straight over it.

At Shabbiri Hardware we stock the white 310ml cartridge (560g net) as our fastest-moving interior sealant. It is what our contractors, fundis, painters, aluminium fabricators and DIY customers reach for when a joint needs to disappear under a coat of paint rather than stand out as a shiny silicone line.

HOW TO USE — STEP-BY-STEP APPLICATION GUIDE

What You Will Need

Caulking gun (skeleton or heavy-duty) · utility knife · masking tape · clean cloth or sponge · bucket of clean water · caulking / finishing tool or spatula · backer rod for deep joints · dust brush.

Step 1 — Prepare the Surface

The joint must be clean, dry, sound and free of dust, oil, grease, loose paint, old sealant, laitance and release agents. Brush out loose material and wipe the joint down. Let damp surfaces dry fully — AS606 is water-based and will not bond correctly to a wet or contaminated substrate. On very porous or dusty substrates such as raw plaster or aerated block, prime by brushing in a 1:5 dilution of AS606 in clean water and letting it dry before sealing.

Step 2 — Mask the Joint (for a sharp finish)

Run masking tape along both edges of the joint. This gives a crisp, professional line and saves clean-up time — especially valuable on decorative cornices, skirtings and architraves.

Step 3 — Set the Joint Depth

For joints deeper than about 10 mm, insert a closed-cell polyethylene backer rod so the sealant bonds only to the two joint faces, not the back. Two-sided adhesion lets the bead stretch and compress properly instead of tearing.

Step 4 — Prepare the Cartridge

Cut the cartridge seal at the threaded top. Screw on the plastic nozzle and cut it at a 45° angle to a diameter matching your joint width. Cut small first — you can always widen the opening, but you cannot make it smaller. Load into the caulking gun.

Step 5 — Apply the Sealant

Hold the gun at roughly 45° to the joint and apply steady, even pressure, pushing the bead ahead of the nozzle rather than dragging it behind. Move at a constant speed to lay a continuous, void-free bead that fills the joint from the back forward. Work in manageable 1–2 metre sections so you can tool before the surface skins.

Apply only between +5°C and +40°C. Do not apply in rain, or where rain or washing water may hit the fresh bead before it has skinned.

Step 6 — Tool the Bead

Within 10 minutes of application (before skin formation), smooth the bead with a caulking tool, spatula or a clean finger dipped in soapy water. Tooling forces the sealant into contact with both joint faces and produces the concave, professional finish. Wipe excess onto a damp cloth as you go.

Step 7 — Remove Masking Tape

Peel the tape away immediately after tooling, while the sealant is still wet, pulling it back on itself at a shallow angle. Waiting until it skins will tear the bead edge.

Step 8 — Clean Up

Clean tools, hands and any smears with plain water while the sealant is still wet. Once cured, the material has to be removed mechanically with a blade — so do not leave clean-up for later.

Step 9 — Allow to Cure

A skin forms in 10–20 minutes. The sealant cures at roughly 2 mm per 24 hours and reaches full cure in 3–7 days, depending on bead depth, temperature and humidity. Protect the fresh bead from water, dust and traffic during this period. Cure is slower in cold or very humid conditions.

Step 10 — Paint Over (Optional)

AS606 is fully paintable. For best results, wait until the bead has skinned and firmed properly — typically 24 hours for a normal bead — before painting. Water-based emulsion, vinyl and acrylic paints give the best result. Always run a small compatibility test first with alkyd, oil-based or high-gloss enamel paints, as some solvent-based systems can wrinkle or dry slowly over any flexible acrylic sealant.

Professional Tips from the Shabbiri Hardware Team

  1. Store the cartridge indoors at room temperature before use. A cold cartridge is stiff and gives an uneven bead.
  2. Cut the nozzle to match the joint, not the other way round. Most bad-looking caulk lines start with an over-large nozzle cut.
  3. Never apply over silicone. Nothing sticks to cured silicone — remove it completely first.
  4. On very wide or deep gaps, build up in layers, letting each cure, or back-fill with backer rod. A single thick bead traps uncured material inside.
  5. Keep a damp sponge in your other hand. Constant wiping is the difference between a DIY finish and a fundi finish.
  6. Seal the nozzle with a nail or screw after part-use so the remainder does not skin over inside.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q: Can you paint over Akfix AS606 acrylic sealant? A: Yes. AS606 is fully paintable, which is its main advantage over silicone. Allow the bead to skin and firm — normally about 24 hours — then apply water-based emulsion, vinyl or acrylic paint. Test compatibility first with oil-based or high-gloss enamels.

Q: What is the difference between acrylic sealant and silicone sealant? A: Acrylic sealant like AS606 is water-based, paintable, low-odour and ideal for interior joints and cracks with limited movement. Silicone is not paintable but handles more movement and permanently wet areas. For skirtings, cornices, wall cracks and window perimeters that will be painted, acrylic is the correct choice. For showers and sinks, use a sanitary silicone.

Q: Is Akfix AS606 waterproof? A: Once fully cured, AS606 is waterproof and resists water ingress. It is not designed for permanently submerged joints such as pools or water tanks.

Q: How long does Akfix AS606 take to dry? A: A skin forms in 10–20 minutes. It cures at approximately 2 mm per 24 hours and reaches full cure in 3–7 days depending on bead thickness, temperature and humidity.

Q: How many metres will one 310ml cartridge cover? A: Approximately 12 metres at a 5×5 mm bead, or about 3 metres at a 10×10 mm bead.

Q: Can I use AS606 outdoors? A: It performs well in protected exterior locations such as under eaves and on vertical joints. Avoid exposed horizontal joints, ponding water and high-movement expansion joints.

Q: Does it work on wood and gypsum board? A: Yes. AS606 bonds excellently to porous substrates including wood, MDF, gypsum board, plaster, concrete, brick and masonry.

Q: What is the shelf life? A: 18 months in the unopened cartridge, stored between +5°C and +25°C in a cool, dry place. Protect from freezing.
