What Is WD-40 Used For?
WD-40 is a true multi-purpose product. Common uses include:
- Stops squeaks – silences squeaking hinges, doors, gates and pulleys
- Drives out moisture – displaces water from wet electrical equipment, spark plugs and metal parts to prevent short circuits
- Cleans and protects – removes grease, grime, adhesive residue, tar and gunk; leaves a protective film against rust and corrosion
- Loosens rusted parts – penetrates and frees seized nuts, bolts, locks, chains and threads
- Frees sticky mechanisms – restores movement to stiff zips, sliders, tools, rollers and moving parts
Also ideal for: bicycle and motorbike chains, garden shears, padlocks, hinges, sewing machines, tools, gate wheels, car door seals, and protecting metal surfaces from rust in humid or coastal areas.
How to Use WD-40 (Smart Straw)
- Shake the can well before use.
- For a precise spray: flip the red Smart Straw up (90°) to release a narrow, targeted stream — perfect for tight gaps, bolts and mechanisms.
- For a wide spray: fold the Smart Straw down flat against the nozzle to cover a broad surface area.
- Hold the can upright (or as needed) about 15–20 cm from the surface and press the nozzle.
- Wipe away excess product and loosened dirt with a clean cloth.
- Reapply as needed for heavily rusted or seized parts, allowing a few minutes for the product to penetrate.
