5. How to Use the Riland MMA 250-JT (Step-by-Step)

Before you start — safety first. Always wear a welding helmet with the correct shade lens, dry leather gloves, closed shoes, and long non-flammable clothing. Work in a dry, well-ventilated area and keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Never weld on wet ground or on sealed/pressurised containers.

  1. Position the machine. Place the welder on a stable, dry surface with clear airflow around the vents so the fan can cool it. Keep it away from water and flammable materials.
  2. Check your power supply. Connect to a properly earthed 220–240V single-phase socket rated for the machine's current draw. Avoid long, thin extension leads — they cause voltage drop and a weak arc.
  3. Connect the cables. Insert the earth/ground clamp lead and the electrode-holder lead into the machine's output terminals. For most general steel work using standard rods, connect for DCEP (electrode positive) — confirm the correct polarity for your specific electrode.
  4. Attach the earth clamp. Clamp the ground lead firmly to clean, bare metal on your workpiece or welding bench. A poor earth connection is the No. 1 cause of a bad arc.
  5. Fit the electrode. Insert a suitable rod (2.5mm or 3.2mm is ideal for general work) into the electrode holder at roughly 90°.
  6. Set the current. Use the front dial/digital control to set amperage to suit the rod and metal thickness — as a guide, roughly 30–40A per millimetre of electrode diameter (e.g. ~90–120A for a 3.2mm rod). Thicker metal and larger rods need more current.
  7. Strike the arc. Scratch or tap the rod tip on the workpiece like striking a match, then lift it 2–3mm to establish the arc. Hot Start gives you an easy first strike.
  8. Weld the joint. Hold a short, steady arc and move at a consistent speed, keeping the rod at about a 70–80° angle in the direction of travel. Watch the molten pool, not the arc flash. Arc Force keeps the arc stable as you work into the joint.
  9. Chip and inspect. After each pass, let it cool slightly, then chip off the slag and brush clean before laying the next bead. Inspect for full, even penetration.
  10. Shut down safely. Switch off, unplug, and let the machine and workpiece cool. Coil the cables and store the welder in a dry place.
